About Us
My name is Les Marsh and in the photo to the right, I'm the one wearing
the hat.
I have been a keen angler since my early teens and then had the pleasure
of living in Darwin (NT) for over 8 years commencing in 1978, and fishing
the extensive flood plain, billabong and lagoon systems for the mighty
Barramundi, as well as making the most of the local salt water scene.
Originally from South Australia, the home of the prized King George
whiting and hump headed Snapper, I've also spent some time in the Snowy
Mountain region of NSW, and Jindabyne, Thredbo and the lakes and streams
of the Eucumbene and Maranoa are areas that hold fond memories for me.
(Bloody cold though!!).
Having settled in Cairns in the mid eighties with my wife Pam, I ran
the very successful calm water guiding operation 'Fishing The Tropics'
for some thirteen years until just recently.
Although I'm not the sort of bloke that enjoys flashing his badge, I
am proud of my involvement in the recreational fishing industry up this
way, I am the immediate past secretary for the Professional Fishing Guides
Association of Queensland.
I also represent local recreational fishing on several key Queensland Government committees
including the Far North's Zonal Advisory Committee (ZAC) advising the
Queensland Fish Management Authority and the Trinity Inlet Management
Plan. As a past director of Tourism Tropical North Queensland (formerly
the Far North Queensland Promotion Bureau) I also have many travel industry
contacts (and mates) within peak tourism bodies including Tourism Queensland
(QTTC) and Qantas Airlines.
Before I decided to go fishing full-time, Pam and I owned and operated
Tropical Holiday Units at Trinity Beach for over ten years, and prior
to coming to Cairns we started up the Station Resort complex at Jindabyne
in 1987. Back before that I was the Managing Director of the Maid & Magpie
Hotel in Adelaide, South Australia during the early to mid '80's.
What I've been doing for the past few years, and my love and passion
for fishing led me to get all this stuff out of my head and into a web
site where I could share with you in the hope that I can convince you
to come to Far North Queensland and experience that thrill of a lifetime.
Fishing Cairns offers the only comprehensive information-based site covering
all aspects of fishing this magnificent Tropical North Queensland and
Cairns region. Whether your goal is to chase that elusive giant Black
Marlin out from the Great Barrier Reef, or targeting Australia's premier
light tackle sportfish, the might barramundi, up the creek, Fishing Cairns
covers the lot and much more in between.
From bottom bouncing for prime eating reef fish and extended charters
in wilderness regions, to a simple half day outing for mum, dad and the
kids, everything you need to know can be found on this site expressed
in plain simple language like you were talking to a mate down at the pub.
There are plenty of sites out there trying to get you to book this charter
or that trip, and we can certainly arrange any fishing related tour that
you want, but what I try to do is to give you all the necessary info to
feel completely confident in knowing exactly what your options are, and
the know-how to go and do it.
With our extensive local knowledge and support from our local fishing
charter and travel industry mates, Fishing Cairns can satisfy all of your
local touring, fishing and accommodation requirements with the minimum
of fuss.
Check it out, drop us a line,
and remember,
"If you can't catch it in North Queensland, it's probably not
worth catching"
