Location Map 7 Day Princess Charlotte Bay

Your 7 day Cape York sportsfishing adventure starts with a charter flight on Friday from Cairns to Princess Charlotte Bay, 350kms NNW of Cairns.

The flight takes approximately 1.5 hours flying over Port Douglas and the World Heritage Daintree rainforest, and then west of Cooktown over the Normanby and Kennedy Rivers in Lakefield National Park.

Barramundi Being shielded from the south-east trade winds, Princess Charlotte Bay provides an ideal haven for the keen angler. The area plays host to a myriad of extensive mangrove river systems, lagoons and offshore coral reefs.

Sunset The fishing is as varied as the Great Barrier Reef itself with Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Mud Crabs galore, the mighty Barramundi, and larger Mackerel and pelagics.

There'll also be the opportunity to witness Tropical North Queensland's magnificent wildlife including crocodiles and an abundance of sea birds in their unspoilt natural environment, so be sure to bring your camera and binoculars.

BoomerangRussell and Annalies Player, owners and operators of Boomerang Sport Fishing have over 20 years local fishing experience. Our young and energetic team know fishing and how to make your trip a memorable one.

Crabs Built in 1976 ( and extensively renovated in 2003), the MV Boomerang II is a comfortable 19m long with a 5.5m beam and 2.0m draft. Powered by a 6 cyl Gardiner Diesel engine, it has all modern navigation aids and safety gear, and a 240 volt generator. 4 air-conditioned cabins comfortably sleep 8 people, and share hot showers and toilets.

Various fishing formats can be catered for including reef fishing and light tackle blue water sportfishing from the Boomerang. River and estuary fishing from fully guided 4.55m Polycrafts dinghies with 4 stroke 50HP Yamaha Motors.

Itinerary

The following is a guide only and actual charter movements may vary considerably and is dependent on prevailing weather and tidal conditions experienced at the time.

  • Day 1: After arriving at Princess Charlotte Bay, the rest of the day is spent either fishing the estuary river for Barra etc, catching crab bait / setting crab pots or waiting for the tide to enable a move to the Bizant River. Your fishing guide is available for tuition if required.
  • Flowery Cod Day 2: Fishing all day for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, King Salmon, Grunter or GT.
  • Day 3: Perhaps move to a different river system (say Bizant, Marrett or Normanby) for more of the same.
  • Day 4: On the tide move to Flinders Islands for some light game fishing and trolling for GT's, Mackerel, Queenfish and other pelagics. Then maybe a beach BBQ if the weather is OK.
  • Day 5: Depending on the weather conditions we will steam for a bit over 3 hours to Davies and Tydeman Reefs on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef and do some reef fishing for Coral Trout and Red Emperor.
  • Day 6: Reef fishing. Depending on freight schedules your assistance may be required on either Friday or Saturday to help unload the supply ship anchored in the Owen Channel. Limber up a bit while transferring supplies / drinks etc from the mother ship to the Boomerang - just like the clients on the previous charter did for your supplies / drinks the week before.....thanks!
  • Day 7: More reef fishing, then return to the river systems on the tide. Overnight awaiting your departure early the next morning.
  • Day 8: Depart Princess Charlotte Bay for Cairns.

What To Bring

Please limit your luggage to a maximum of 15kg (this is crucial for charter flights) carried in a soft bag only (no hard suitcases). If you are staying in Cairns, your "town clothes" can be left at the office of the charter aircraft company for pick up on your return, or you could make arrangements with the hotel you will be staying at for them to look after your belongings while you're away.

Your recent weight reading will be required approximately 30 days prior to charter.

Anglers are encouraged to bring along their favourite outfits. Although the Boomerang provides basic tackle - hand lines, some rod & reels for river / estuary / reef fishing, hooks and sinkers and a limited supply of lures (available on a replace if lost / broken basis) we operate in a remote location where repairs and replacements are not readily available. Remember that weight and length restrictions do apply. Rods must be securely packed and be limited to 2.5 metres in length - 6ft is ideal.

Should anglers arriving into Cairns require personal assistance in choosing their tackle, Keith Graham of Bransfords Tackle Shop has kindly offered to pick up clients from their Cairns hotel / accommodation (with sufficient notice) and drive them to his outlet to select the right gear for the conditions.

  • Spanish MackerelRods: A 6-8kg fishing rod not exceeding 185cm (6 feet) for estuary and river fishing. Good rods to use include Ugly Sticks, Silstar Power Tip, or more upmarket rods like Pacific Composites or Loomis. For fishing the reef, or fighting game fish, a 15-24kg fishing rod not exceeding 185cm is adequate.
  • Reels: Good quality overhead (baitcaster) or thread line (egg beater) fishing reels are advisable. It is recommended that the reel be in good order, with a drag that is smooth when under load. Contact your local tackle shop if unsure how to achieve this.
  • Line: It is recommended that the minimum line class used for river/estuary fishing be no less than 20lb (9.1kg). For reef or light game fishing, 30lb (13.6kg) to 80lb (36.3kg) will "talk turkey" to the bigger ones. Although the use of monofilament or the newer generation of braided lines is a personal preference, braided lines do offer a significant advantage over monofilament lines - strength for diameter, low stretch and good casting properties.
  • Sunset FishingTraces: You will need approximately 1x50m of 50-60lb monofilament trace material (Jinkai, Surecatch, etc) and 1x20m of 60-80lb wire trace material (Twist weld or crimp type).
  • Lures: Lure's to have are Gold Bombers, Mann's stretch series, Killalures, Tilsan, Riedy's, etc. The idea is to have a selection of deep and shallow diving lures in gold, orange, green, blue, pink, white and red.

Don't forget to bring your HAT, SUNGLASSES, SANDSHOES (for rock fishing), a bum bag or small backpack, small lure box 40cm x 20-30cm, Bushman insect repellent (cream), camera and extra film. Note - no aerosol cans permitted on charter flights.

Please note that we are fishing in a wilderness location, communications may be difficult and transport arrangements subject to weather and availability of suitable light aircraft / vessels etc.

The scenery is stunning, the fishing exciting and varied but we encourage sport fishing and catch and release practices. There is a limit of 10 kg of cleaned / filleted fish per person which is air freighted back to Cairns upon your departure. Any other arrangements are at clients expense.
