GT Popper Package
Giant
Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) or "GT's"
as they are universally known are 'pound for pound' one of the toughest
fish to catch in the world.
Found throughout the Indo Pacific Oceans, the greatest numbers however
are found on the bommies and structures of Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Not only are they back breakers to land, but they will cut you off in
the reef with total disregard for your expensive tackle. It is little
wonder that GT's are the ultimate fish to catch and the Japanese angling
fraternity in particular rate them more highly than black marlin - now
that's saying something!
These fish average from 8kgs to over 40kgs and are in large numbers on
the reefs north and south of Cairns.
One of the most exciting methods to land these brutes is by popper fishing
- using mainly 30lb test monofilament (or 50-80 lb braid tackle) and large
surface poppers that give a large splashy wounded baitfish action.
Preferred lures include YOZURI, SAURUS, SKAGIT DESIGN, FISHERMAN etc.
Jigging is also very productive and is best done with #5-#7 PE (50-70lb
Braid) and metal jigs from 70 to 200 grams. Other species caught using
this method include giant, golden, bludger, big-eye and brassy trevally
along with mackerel, dogtooth
tuna and coral trout.
GT charters are available year round but the best months are September
through to March. One local operator boasts the impressive figures of
37 releases in a day (average size 15Kgs), by two anglers. The most released
on a 2-day charter 59 and on a 3-day charter it is 74. Now that's backbreaking
and exciting fishing in anyone's language, guaranteed to put a smile on
your dial and a thirst in your throat.
Day trips are available from Cairns with excellent results but we recommend
a 3- day live on board charter to visit some of the more remote areas
east of Innisfail or north of Cairns.
These charters are usually only undertaken on a "sole charter"
basis and as it's your day / trip, fishing styles and targets can be amended
to suit your skill level and available fish species. The options on these
extended charters are only limited by your imagination and all we can
guarantee is a good time, in superb surrounding, with modern vessels and
equipment and some of the most knowledgeable skippers found anywhere.
These charters include all quality tackle, lures, meals, light refreshments,
morning and afternoon teas, coffee, soft drink, basic Aussie beers and
dinner wine.
The cost does not include accommodation pre and post charter, breakfast
on day of departure or special alcohol requirements i.e. spirits, champagne
etc. which can be catered for additional cost.
