The Daintree River:

The mighty Daintree River rises behind Port Douglas. It flows north through this mountainous World Heritage listed rainforest region before completing its horseshoe shaped path to the Coral sea. It is not a big river by world standards, but during the monsoon wet season huge volumes of warm tropical water flows strongly through this ancient landscape past majestic rainforest trees, some 125 million years old (the oldest in the world). The lower reaches of the fresh water zone are centred on the Daintree Village and the waters broaden to include fertile backwaters - many species of fresh water mangrove trees guard its banks.

Further downstream the inter-tidal zone offers another unique feature of this magnificent waterway. The humble mangrove tree, probably the most important plant species on the globe, is evident as a tall forest like fortress as well as low scrubby bushes. Their unique root structure, mangroves breathe through their roots, forming huge buttresses along the channels near the delta mouth. Over twenty species of mangrove trees are found in this system. Crocodiles inhabit these waters.

The Fishing:

The best time to fish the upstream sweet water reaches is a few days after heavy rainfall. The summer months from November to March is prime time for this zone. As the flooding river returns to its main channel, small gutters and creeks bring food rich waters into the main stream. Barramundi patrol these food stations and they are aggressive feeders at this time of year. Any backwater or eddy is also a productive area to toss a shallow running six inch lure. Most fish are juveniles however, averaging around 4-6lbs, but don't be surprised to encounter much larger specimens to 30lb occasionally.

Mangrove Jacks and GT's will also travel way upstream to the fresh to gorge themselves while jungle perch and sooty grunter are common captures if the water is relatively clear. Light spinning, lure and fly fishing is the preferred method here and it is also possible to catch Australia's smaller version of the tarpon. A much prized fish in the Americas where it can reach sizes of over 200lb, our fish however peak out at about 8lb, but still does all the right things fight wise.

Drifting downstream on the current, casting repeatedly to the preferred lies, can produce 10-20 barra on good days. The swaying beds of ribbon grass and lily pads are also prime target areas.

Seasonal conditions play a major part in the range of species available at any given time, with barramundi more active during the warmer months of September to March as they prepared for spawning.

The barramundi season is however, closed during the actual breeding season of November to January inclusive, and all fish caught at this time must be released. Other target species at this time of year include mangrove jack, fingermark, tarpon and grunter.

The cooler months are particularly good for queenfish and the 4 species of trevally encountered locally. These great sportfish can be caught up to 10 kg’s, and on light 3-6 kg tackle offer even the experienced angler a great work out.

This is also a prime time for flathead, bream, whiting, king and blue salmon, and estuary cod. In all, 20 or so species can be encountered.

A unique opportunity, available only with our fishing packages to Tranquility, is bank side fishing ……strolling along our private river frontage, casting to deep holes, back eddies, grass verges, stream junctions and gutters. Many of the above species are prime light tackle targets here. And for the Fly Fishing enthusiast, opens up another world of opportunity (check our fly fishing section for tackle, targets etc).

These special packages are tailored to the light tackle lure & fly fishing enthusiast and can be amended to suit your preferred stay. We recommend at least three nights to get the best value and experience out of this stunning location BUT we can amend this to suit your specific needs and time constraints.
