River / Estuary Lure And Fly Fishing
Lure and fly fishing in our magnificent jungle clad rivers and mangrove lined estuaries is the way to go. With the assistance of our experienced guides, you will be taken to the best fishing locations in Tropical North Queensland. (See our Fly Fishing section for more info).
The mighty rainforest river, the Daintree, is just 1½ hours drive north of Cairns by comfortable airconditioned 4WD, and its near pristine waters offer the keen angler the chance to tangle with quality fish on a more consistent basis than any other northern waterway.
The summer months of December to March see our prime target fish entering spawning mode. They become very active in the warming waters, and barramundi - Australia's number 1 light tackle sports fish - can be caught up to 10 kgs in the tidal reaches.
The wet season sees smaller fish to 4 kgs congregating around the many drains and gutters bringing "fresh water" run-off into the river proper.
This is also mangrove jack time, and many an angler is left weak kneed and minus a lure following a "jack attack" from one of these little battlers. Other species encountered include flathead, estuary cod and barracuda in the salt, and sooty grunter, tarpon and jungle perch in the sweet water sections.
During the cooler months (June-Sept), majestic queenfish up to 10 kilograms patrol the sand bar edges and drop-offs and are an exhilarating catch on surface poppers and fizzers. Giant Trevally also accompany these fish at this time of year.
An hour south of Cairns are the Russell and Mulgrave River systems with conditions similar to the Daintree. Other areas including Mourylian Harbour, and the South and North Johnstone Rivers can also be fished in consultation with our guides.
All quality tackle is provided, both spinning and overhead reels matched to light 3 to 6 kilo top range rods, or 8-9 WT fly outfits, sinking tippets preferred with 4-6" streamer flies.
Accurate casting of a 6 inch Gold Bomber lure or fly will usually entice a crashing strike from barramundi, GT's, mangrove jack, flathead and even barracuda in the salt water sections. If conditions are right, a visit to the fresh "sweet" water sections of our rivers can yield tarpon, sooty grunter, jungle perch and still more barramundi.
Light refreshments, soft drinks, and lunch are provided, and the starting and finishing times of these full day tours are adjusted to match the tides to provide peak fishing conditions.
Angler comfort and safety is of paramount concern to all guides, essential items include a broad brimmed hat, long sleeved cotton shirt / clothing and sun block for protection from the tropical rays. Quality polaroid sun glasses however are probably the most important single item that any angler should have in their tackle box - not only will it enable you to see into the water (you might even enjoy that strike more) but offer protection from flying hooks and lures.
