Fish Species Of North Queensland

Sweetlip

Also known as ‘Tricky Snapper’, and another prime eating tropical reef fish, Sweetlip are found around most shallow bommies and reef structure.

Tricky’s shows subtle variations in color with some members of the family having distinctive red mouths and throat regions and are more commonly called “Red Throat Emperor”. Another common name for the various sub species of this fish is just “Emperor” which should not be confused with the “Red Emperor” fully described elsewhere in these pages.

Sweetlip are usually caught while fishing for other reef species and heavy hand lining techniques account for most captures. Sizes range from two pounds upwards and fish of over eight pounds quite common. Size and bag limits do apply.
