Lure and fly fishing is one of the most exciting methods here in the tropics and allows you to cover a variety of different angling situations. This style of fishing is generally aimed at the intermediate or advanced angler but if you’re a newcomer to the sport we are happy to teach you and have you competent in no time. Learn a variety of ‘retrieve’ styles and how to get the best out of your lures and soft plastics in a multitude of scenarios.
We also cater for the ‘Popper” fisherman who like to target the big GT’s and oversize queenfish that inhabit our local reefs and headlands. Always good fun trying to land them on baitcasters and small eggbeater outfits, but not recommended for the faint-hearted.
Fish the upper reaches of the Endeavour, Annan and McIvor rivers with a nice 3-5 weight outfit for species such as jungle perch and sooty grunter. Enjoy a cooling swim in a ‘croc-free’ environment where you can lie back and enjoy the flora and fauna of the area. The fish here may not grow huge but on the relative tackle and the sheer beauty of the places you’ll be visiting, you’ll have a ball.
Once you start coming down into the lower reaches things change dramatically. It may be time to put away the 5 weight and get out the 7-9 weight. All of a sudden the number of species you can target increase. Barra and Jacks around the snags (fly placement is the key factor here). Fish the deeper holes for queenies, trevally and tarpon which I reckon are made for the fly rodder. Then try manouvering around the flats by electric motor and sight-fishing for species such as Barra, Giant Herring, Milkfish, Permit, Queenfish, Trevally and the elusive Bonefish.

Fish Stocking:
Copperlode Dam has been stocked with bony bream, barramundi, sooty grunter, archerfish, sleepy cod, eel-tailed catfish and mangrove jack. the dam was essentially used by DPI as a trial fish stocking pond. The sooty grunter were apparently first stocked there by a fisheries biologist in the late 1970’s. Archerfish, sleepy cod, bony bream and catfish were stocked by DPI staff in the early 1980’s, and then more sooty grunter & barramundi in the early 1990’s, with significant stocking of this species ongoing from then.
A total of 3,980 mangrove jack were stocked there in December 1998 and June 1999 by DPI staff as part of a trial to test their suitability for other freshwater impoundments. All of the above-mentioned species have established breeding populations with the exception of barramundi, mangrove jack. Barramundi and mangrove jack cannot breed in freshwater and although sooty grunter can breed in freshwater it is uncertain if the feeder creeks can support spawning.
A restocking program commenced in late 2016, with Barramundi fingerlings being released into the dam regularly since then.

This is sustainable fishing at its best! Don’t deplete Australia’s limited wild stock, practise your lure and land techniques at Hook-A-Barra.
These are farmed Barramundi, but anglers won’t be disappointed with their fight. They are wild creatures and will behave exactly the same as those living in rivers. Our fish are not trained to jump on your hook. Your technique is very important.
For beginners, guidance is provided by experienced staff. For experienced anglers (who may be skeptical about ‘fishing in a pond’), this is your chance to practise your Barramundi catch and land techniques and try new lures and equipment. NB: For your safety and ours, there are no treble hooks allowed at Hook-A-Barra, we use single, barbless hooks only.

Ribbon Reef Location Information
The Ribbon Reefs were the scene of the iconic and groundbreaking video by Malcolm Florence titled “The Great Reef Exploration”, filmed in the late 1970’s. Back in the seventies, this area was considered the ultimate in remote Sportfishing locations – incredibly remote, pristine reefs that could only be accessed by large vessels with significant fuel capacity.
Not much has changed really….And the fishing is just as good as it ever was. It’s still very remote, and rarely fished.
The Ribbon Reefs are famous for the incredible fishing for giant black marlin, and this 100 mile stretch of reef is the single best place in the world to catch giant black marlin. But it’s not just marlin that find these waters incredibly appealing. This stretch of reef is home to a massive variety of species, with big GTs, yellowfin, coral trout, red bass, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and many other species calling this place home. So no matter what bluewater species you want to catch, the Ribbon Reefs offer an amazing fishing experience
